Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc. wins a Phénix de l’environnement

Bécancour, May 23, 2003 – Yesterday evening at the prestigious gala of the Les Phénix de l’environnement competition at Métropolis in Montreal, Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc. took a prize in the “Know-how in sustainable development“ category under the sub-category “Primary or secondary sector company having used processes or technologies to improve its environmental performance”, for its greenhouse gas reduction project aimed mainly at reducing the levels of CF4 and C2F6 caused by anode effects. The two other finalists in the category were:
Graymont (located in Marbleton), a world leader in the production of chemical lime. The company developed a new opencast mine in a rural area using tried and tested technologies to protect the environment The Société de transport de Montréal and its partners for the use of biodiesel for their 155 buses. The Phénix de l'environnement competition was initiated six years ago and is intended to recognize exceptional contributions by Quebecers to environmental protection and sustainable development. The competition was inaugurated by the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Research, Industry and Trade division, RECYC-QUÉBEC and Collecte sélective Québec. Pierre Mercier, Manager, Laboratory and Environment, at Bécancour, received the prize yesterday evening with much pride and emotion. “It is important to us that our efforts be recognized because our reduction goals are aimed chiefly at greenhouse gases due to their significant effect on the environment,” he commented.
