Bécancour Smelter (ABI) and Union Agree on New Contract

On February 22, 2013, the members of the Syndicat des Métallos of the Bécancour Smelter voted to accept a new collective agreement at ABI.

The new labor contract, based on a period of five years, will be in force until November 22, 2017. The previous collective agreement expired at midnight on November 22, 2012.
The economic impact for the Bécancour smelter in 2011 was $494 million in Québec, including $237 million for the region of Bécancour.
Bécancour Aluminum Amelter (ABI)
Owned by Alcoa (75%) and Rio Tinto Alcan (25%), the Bécancour Smelter (ABI) produces 425,000 metric tons of aluminum per year. In Québec, Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products (GPP Canada) comprises the Bécancour (ABI), Baie-Comeau and Deschambault smelters, and the Bécancour Rod Plant. Its activities have an economic impact of close to $1.5 billion per year. Together, these facilities produce more than 1 million metric tons of ingots, castings, billets, and aluminum rod.
