Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products takes concrete action for the environment

From April 21 to June 21, employees from the Bécancour, Deschambault and Baie-Comeau smelters of Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products (GPP Canada), along with their families, friends and members of their communities, joined forces to take action in a spirit of sustainability. Their efforts had a major impact on the success of the global Alcoa Green Works initiative, which encourages employees to work together to have a positive impact on the environment.

As part of Alcoa’s 10 Millions Trees program, they rallied together to plant 4,230 trees and complete five planting initiatives in collaboration with partner organizations.  This has brought the total number of trees and shrubs planted in Canada to 97,000. They also took part in the 5th edition of Défi Climat (Climate Challenge), the Quebec-based greenhouse gas reduction campaign, by serving some 1,000 vegetarian meals at its plants’ cafeterias.
In addition, the municipalities of Bécancour, Deschambault-Grondines/Portneuf and Baie-Comeau launched the Alcoa Sustainable Communities Fund. Alcoa Canada will invest $25 million in this fund over 25 years to support the implementation of sustainability initiatives in these communities.
Finally, three Canadians were among 26 Alcoa employees from 13 countries chosen to participate in Earthwatch expeditions this summer along with scientists in Brazil and on the edge of the Canadian arctic. In 10 years, 144 employees have given 9,500 hours of their time to research conducted by leading experts to find solutions to some of the biggest environmental and sustainability challenges of our time. “Sustainability is a fundamental Alcoa value and we prove it year after year through our commitment to the success of our various programs and through the investments we make in each of our host communities,” said Lysane Martel, Manager of the Alcoa Foundation in Canada. “This is only a small sample of what we achieve during the course of a year!” she concludes.
