2011 Leucan Shaved Head Challenge – “Alcoa Style”: Get one step a-head of your boss!

In support of the fight against leukemia waged by Raphaël, the son of plant employee Guy Martel, 60 of his colleagues at the Alcoa smelter in Deschambault have decided to take up the Leucan Shaved Head Challenge in front of their fellow workers gathered for their lunch break.

It was in the company of Raphaël, the hero of the day, that five hairdressers shaved the heads of the participants who succeeded in gathering an important amount of funds: $13,336.55.

“When members of the emergency squad suggested that I hold a group challenge at the plant, I accepted. The Deschambault team is known for its legendary and spontaneous generosity. But when I saw the number of participants grow, it is with emotion that I understood to what extent they could commit themselves to contributing to this cause that is so close to my heart,” underlined Guy Martel, Raphaël’s father. “As much as 10% of our population decided to shave their heads. Now that was quite a surprise!” he exclaimed.

The participants included Martin Brière, CEO of the smelter. “When a few employees came to see me about the challenge, I didn’t hesitate one bit. As a father of three young children, I believe that giving to Leucan is contributing to its mission which is to heighten the confidence in the future of children with cancer and their families.”

“I am truly proud to see that for the past six years, the participation of the people from the Québec City area has never ceased to rise. Their gesture is of invaluable significance to children suffering from cancer. This is why we invite everyone to become a hero too!” explains Nathalie Matte, Regional Director and Director of Financial Development of Leucan, Region of Québec.

And speaking of the future of children, it is without hesitation that the plant decided to take the opportunity of this challenge to plant a tree on the plant’s premises as a symbol of life and the future. Thus, the planting will serve to launch actions in keeping with the Alcoa Foundation’s new Alcoa – Green Works project.
