Alcoa Canada Primary Metals launches the 2008 edition of its report on sustainability

– Alcoa Canada Primary Metals is proud to present the 2008 edition of its sustainability report, available in electronic format at the following address: http://www.alcoa.com/canada/en/pdf/en_rdd_2008/rdd08_eng.pdf

This report presents the results and advances of the company in Québec with respect to the environment, social commitment and economic development. “Upon visiting the site, you will notice that we are enjoying some success, despite the economic situation we have been weathering since the fall of 2008. This success is down to our employees who have spared no effort, our suppliers who have adapted to our reality, the Government of Québec who rapidly took efficient measures to help us maintain our operations, and the City of Baie-Comeau whose partnership is steadfast and unfailing,” stated Jean-Pierre Gilardeau, President of Alcoa Canada. Buoyed by the support of each of the communities where Alcoa is present, we can be proud of the year 2008, as it sets itself apart with a number of events, including the following:

Environment
  • Having surpassed the objectives of our previous agreement, we renewed with the Government of Québec our voluntary agreement on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction for 2008-2010.
  • As regards air emissions, the prebaked anode facility became a world reference for Alcoa in 2008, as it produced the lowest levels of GHG emissions.
  • With savings of 349 GWh gained through energy efficiency measures, we have more than quintupled our target for 2008 which was 65 GWh.

Social commitment
  • For a second consecutive year, Alcoa Canada Primary Metals’ four plants reached a peak number of employees participating in an in-house survey.
  • The number of employees participating in the Bravo! program (individual volunteer services commitment) in Québec more than doubled over the last four years.

Economic development
  • In March 2008, the Government of Québec and Alcoa signed an agreement that will oversee our development for at least 40 years to come. The agreement provides for the modernization of the aluminum smelter in Baie-Comeau, a project valued at $1.2 billion, and the renewal of the underlying procurement contracts of each of the three Québec smelters.
  • In June 2008, Alcoa Innovation was launched with a view to offer small- and medium-sized businesses technical support for the development of expertise and innovation in the aluminum product segment. This initiative also led to the organization of the first edition of the Alcoa design competition.

All these remarkable accomplishments illustrate that aluminum remains a product with a future, and that it contributes, day after day, to the development of the Québec economy. It does so thanks to the ingenuity and sustained efforts of our employees and of all those who offer us their support.
