Alcoa inaugurates “Le Pont du Moulin” in Deschambault

On behalf of Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation, Mr. Gaston Arcand, Mayor of Deschambault-Grondines, and Mr. Pierre Lapointe, V.-P. and General Manager of the Deschambault smelter, proceeded today with the official inauguration of “Le Pont du Moulin”, a work of art by artist Florent Cousineau, integrated into the bridge located on Chavigny Street in Deschambault.

“Le Pont du Moulin” straddles the La Chevrotière river on an old section of the Chemin du Roy near the Moulin de Lachevrotière, a pillar of the regional heritage.

In 2005, exceptionally high waters swept away the bridge. The importance of the architectural ensemble and the desire to harmoniously link the past to the present nourished the creative process of François Cousineau, the artist we commissioned to integrate a work of art into the new bridge.

“Le Pont du Moulin” offers a profusion of aluminum elements that echo the effect of a light breeze over a wheat field. The work of art, which plays on the light of the sun during the day, becomes a beacon at dusk thanks to soft light radiating from its base.

“Present in Deschambault-Grondines for more than 15 years, Alcoa is particularly proud to thank the municipal authorities for their support, as well as all the people of Deschambault-Grondines for their cooperation and friendship, both of which are precious to Alcoa,” stated Pierre Lapointe, Vice President and CEO of the Deschambault aluminum smelter.

Adding to this heritage such a contemporary gesture illustrates the will of the people of Deschambault-Grondines to remember the past while participating directly to history constantly in the making.

The Deschambault aluminum smelter has a team of 520 employees assigned to the production of over 250,000 metric tonnes of aluminum per year. In Québec, and in addition to the Deschambault smelter, Alcoa Canada Primary Metals includes the smelter and the aluminum rod plant in Bécancour, as well as the smelter in Baie-Comeau. It produces over $1 billion in economic spinoffs in the province every year. In Canada, Alcoa counts over 6,000 employees and owns 25 aluminum smelters and fabricating plants that produce over 1 million metric tonnes of aluminum ingots, castings, billet and rod per year.
