Alcoa Makes a Wish for Earth Day!

|

|
Montréal, April 15, 2008 – Alcoa has been a major partner in Québec Earth Day for the past seven years. This number is all the more significant since it is reputed to be a lucky number, and this year is precisely the year when Earth Day demands that we make a wish for the planet. At Alcoa, our wish is that everyone may take action within the best of their abilities. The reduction by 15% of our greenhouse gas emissions compared to figures for 2001 constitutes a good example of concrete results that may be achieved when everyone makes an effort.

Every year, Earth Day gives rise to a series of activities and initiatives within our facilities. Following are a few details of the actions we wish to encourage for Earth Day 2008:
- At the Baie-Comeau smelter, we are reducing transportation for Earth Day! Our employees are encouraged to use their bicycles, to walk or to carpool on that day. Furthermore, a carpool partner research workshop will be held at the plant for a period of two weeks.
- At the Bécancour smelter (ABI), alternate methods of transportation will also be encouraged among our employees who are encouraged to carpool. Tire pressure will also be checked on their vehicles. In addition, thanks to ABI and to Alcoa’s rod plant, public transport will be offered free of charge to the population of Bécancour-Nicolet-Yamaska from April 21 to 25.
- At the Deschambault smelter, responsible energy consumption is the focus of attention. A booth highlighting energy and environmental issues will be set up during the month of April and all the employees will receive a light watch timer system. Also, an activity will be presented to the employees in the shape of a game designed to raise their awareness of the various aspects of sustainable development.
- At Alcoa Canada’s headquarters in Montréal, an information session will be organized to further the use of fairtrade products. This day will also be an opportunity to raise the employees’ awareness of environment-friendly office supplies.
If our aluminum smelters and headquarters are the stage of such activities, other players will not be outdone. The play Acteurs de changement, which bears on sustainable development, will be produced in 2008 thanks to Alcoa and to the Regroupement national des conseils régionaux de l’environnement du Québec (RNCREQ). The play will be presented throughout the province, and a dressed rehearsal will be performed on next April 24 at the Biosphère (on invitation only). In Québec City, long-standing partners Alcoa and the Musée de la civilisation are once again joining forces to celebrate Earth Day with a series of activities to be held on April 19, 20 and 22. They will be offering seed packets to the first 500 visitors (every day) at the Museum as well as to some 200 students in the Québec City area. Several of them will then have the chance to plant their seeds during the event Grande plantation of the Potager des visionnaires, to be held on next May 29 and 31, as well as on June 1, in the company of Franco Dragone. During the Grande plantation, Alcoa, the host sponsor of the Potager des visionnaires, will offer a tree shoot to those who will have registered their names on the website www.mcq.org/dragone and who will return their seedlings to the Musée. This distribution of tree shoots is part of Alcoa’s 10 Million Trees program. The time has come to work together so that all of the wishes expressed for the planet on Earth Day may come true. Alcoa is proud to rank among those who take action! About Alcoa In Québec, Alcoa Canada Primary Metals (ACPM) is comprised of the Baie-Comeau, Bécancour and Deschambault smelters, as well as the Bécancour Rod Plant.
