Much appreciated training in the electrolysis sector
To ensure the updating of technical skills in the electrolysis sector at the Deschambault aluminum smelter, two operators and a group of technicians have developed a four-module training program with the help of a consultant in education. This updating of skills became necessary following personnel changes, and because of observed differences in the experience and knowledge of the team members.

To make sure that the training meets the real needs of workers, those in charge of the project developed a survey to evaluate the intervenors’ knowledge of the electrolysis process. All of the sector’s 164 permanent and temporary employees participated in this evaluation, though doing so was optional. This extraordinary response shows that the employees clearly understood that the goal of this initiative was positive reinforcement rather than competition.

The training, which is offered to groups of a maximum of eight persons and begins with a complete overview of the process, was so well received that even employees who did well on the evaluation asked to participate. Once this updating is completed, the sector will establish a continuing education process adapted to larger groups.
