Result of our 2007 Goals — Environment
Objective: Achievement of the 2006-2007 target for greenhouse emissions, (GHG) established with the Government of Québec.
Result:
- Reached. Relative to the established objective, additional reductions of 100,000 tons over two years were obtained. Over the entire duration of the agreement, from 2001 to 2007, GHG emissions were reduced by 17% in absolute terms.
Objective: Zero non-compliances with laws and regulations.
Result:
- Not reached. A total of nine non-compliances occurred in the region.
Objective: Signature of a voluntary agreement with the Government of Québec with respect to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from 2008 to 2012.
Result:
- Postponed to 2008. A voluntary agreement will be signed before September 2008.
Objective: A 50% reduction in waste landfilled in 2007 compared to 2000.
Result:
- Reached at the Bécancour Smelter and the Bécancour Rod Plant. Reduction of 24% at the Deschambault Smelter. Reduction of only 4% at the Baie-Comeau Smelter due to the increased production of certain wastes and delays in implementing internal recycling processes, which are gradually being rolled out. A new action plan was developed in order to achieve the objective. For the region, a reduction of 18% compared to 2000.
Objective: Completion of energy-efficiency projects to save an estimated total of 56 GWh.
Result:
- Reached. Energy savings of 127 GWh in 2007.
Objective: Global energy use study at the Baie-Comeau Smelter.
Result:
- Reached. A list of initiatives has been prioritized.
