Replacing pot hoods in the Electrolysis sector
A curved electrolytic pot hood has two marked advantages relative to a flat one. First, it is more solid, and thus less likely to be damaged in the potline. Secondly – and this is environmentally significant – it is more air tight and accordingly reduces fluoride emissions.

The environmental commitment of the employees at the Deschambault aluminum smelter – as well as their team spirit – were demonstrated in spades when the plant organized the replacement of no less than 960 pot hoods in the Electrolysis sector. Thirty-five workers offered their services. As soon as a group had completed its quota of pots, its members volunteered to help their neighbours, with the result that this monumental task was finished in only two hours.

The work of replacing pot hoods continued after this initiative, and now almost all the smelter’s hoods are curved– and decidedly more environmentally friendly!
