Sustainability Approach — The Sustainability Advisory Committee
In 2006, Alcoa Canada Primary Metals established the Sustainability Advisory Committee. Its mandate is to advise the organization on how to integrate the sustainability concerns and expectations of Québec society. The committee is made up of 10 external members from various fields and five Alcoa management representatives. The group, which meets four or five times a year, discusses various sustainability issues that they have identified as priorities. A presentation is made by Alcoa on the chosen subject, and participants share their comments and suggestions during work sessions. These comments and suggestions are analyzed, and recommendations made to the Alcoa Canada Primary Metals management team. Alcoa then responds to the committee on the ideas that have been retained. The subjects discussed since the committee’s creation are:
- Community support
- Wealth creation and local procurement
- Succession management
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Communication
- The company’s Sustainability web site
- Employee mobilization
Following these discussions, Alcoa undertook a number of actions , some of which are still underway.
