Sustainability Approach

At Alcoa, sustainability is defined as using our values to build financial success, environmental excellence, and social responsibility through partnerships in order to deliver net long-term benefits to our shareowners, employees, customers, suppliers, and the communities in which we operate.

Our commitment to sustainability has a long history and is evident every day—from the way we live our values to our 2020 strategic framework for sustainability , which is supported by clear targets for measuring progress toward achievement of our vision for 2020. While we have developed a corporate approach to sustainability, implementation occurs at the local level.

Key Sustainability Issues
Alcoa Canada Primary Metals undertook a materiality analysis of its sustainability issues. This analysis assessed the business impact of the various issues, as well as stakeholder interest in these matters. An initial list of relevant issues was drawn up in collaboration with a sustainability consultant. An internal group then evaluated the business impact of each issue, taking into account actual and potential impacts on operations, costs, the company’s reputation and Alcoa Inc. priorities.

Stakeholder interest was analyzed in light of input from the Sustainability Advisory Committee and internal insight gained into the concerns of stakeholders. For example, the issues addressed in the agreements concluded between Alcoa and the government are clear indicators of significant interest.

This review has enabled us to categorize issues according to an approach developed by Stratos, and to identify priority issues  which carry both a major impact on the company and significant stakeholder interest. This exercise will enable us to better target key issues and determine which ones to report on, as well as to identify the elements to consider when developing the future sustainability strategy for Alcoa Canada Primary Metals.
