Mapping Serious Accidents
An exercise to map the risks of accidents at the Baie-Comeau Smelter was held on May 18 and 19, 2010.

To ensure the highest level of safety, we must protect our employees against any weaknesses that could develop in the safety system. We achieve this by identifying risks, resolving issues quickly and trying to prevent them from reoccurring. This approach drives improvements in equipment, work methods, and individual and group performance.
Identifying and measuring risks
The commitment of employees toward building and maintaining a safety-based culture is the key to its success. We believe that we must continuously reinforce our safety culture by ensuring that it evolves as needed. As such, in 2014 we have furthered the implementation of our new approach to raising awareness on the prevention of human error, launched in 2012.


This approach contributed to our record result in 2012, with a recordable incident rate of 0.26. However, this figure did not reflect the severity of an incident that resulted in a death. With a renewed focus on fatality prevention – namely through awareness, training and risk identification programs as well as daily audits of certain high risk tasks and our continuous improvement plan – we have achieved a rate of 0.35 in 2013, our second-best performance. We have all the more reason to celebrate since it does not include a death or a lost-time incident.


To improve our safety system, we must accurately assess risk, then develop and implement operational controls that enable us to close any gaps. To ensure that we prevent all types of incidents and injuries, we have implemented safety programs covering all essential operational issues, including mobile equipment, fall prevention, electricity, enclosed spaces, etc.

Fatality prevention - We value human life above all else. As a result, we are continuously classifying and analyzing all the serious risks associated with our activities so that we can control and mitigate them. Each facility must put measures in place to quickly and precisely identify potential hazards, establish the most effective protective equipment and find the best solutions to the root causes of incidents.
We have implemented a number of initiatives since 2010 to improve our fatality prevention program. In addition to awareness, training and major risk identification programs, we also consolidated our daily audits of certain high-risk tasks in 2011.
Despite all of these efforts, tragic incidents can still occur, as sadly evidenced by the death of one of our own in 2012 at the Baie-Comeau Smelter in an accident involving a fork-lift. A thorough analysis was conducted immediately and corrective measures have been implemented in all of our facilities. In his memory, each of us will redouble our attention and prevention efforts.
Continuous improvement - In addition to our efforts in the area of fatality prevention, we have a continuous improvement plan that targets high severity injuries, such as incidents involving hands, fingers, the back, eyes and burns, as well as injuries to which new employees are more prone. Each facility analyzes its injury record to identify specific problem areas.
Training - Workers and staff at every location are offered training to ensure they have the knowledge and skills needed to support the health and safety program, and to carry out their tasks safely
