Sustainable procurement

Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products has developed a sustainable procurement program focusing on our Québec suppliers that enables us to evaluate them and provide support as they build their own sustainability programs. In 2010, we completed a pilot project during which we evaluated over 80 Québec suppliers in four areas of sustainability: governance, the environment, social aspects, and proximity. The suppliers were scored based on this evaluation and provided with recommendations for improvement.

Informed by the results of this initiative and feedback received during the pilot, we developed a new approach in 2011 that will lead to a 2012 launch of a program aimed at helping Québec suppliers improve their sustainability performance. Suppliers will be chosen to participate in this program based on the importance of their products or services to our operations.   The program design rests on on elements of the BNQ 21000 and input from our Sustainability Advisory Committee. We are also planning to provide our suppliers with training and workshops.

Our initiatives are closely linked to the BNQ 21000, a project supported by Québec Government. The BNQ 21000 guidelines were developed by the Bureau de normalization du Québec to help organizations integrate sustainability principles into their operations.  Twelve Alcoa Canada suppliers were selected to participate in one of the four BNQ 21000 pilot projects. This pilot was partly funded by Alcoa and will continue through 2012. The program offers Québec suppliers support, coaching and tools to assist them in implementing their sustainability approach.

Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products is also one of the founding members of Espace de concertation Québecois sur les pratiques d’approvisionnement responsable (ECPAR - French only). Launched in 2008, this initiative brings together 15 public and private organizations in Québec with the goal of optimizing their sustainability efforts and sharing best practices to promote sustainability in supply chains.
