2013 — Environment
Our suppliers: Partners in environmental conservation
On March 7 and 9, 2013, our suppliers were offered two half-day training sessions on waste management, the fruit of a collaboration between various sectors of the Bécancour and Baie-Comeau Smelters, and partnerships with community organizations. At each session, participants received advice and were taken on a tour of a maintenance workshop.
In Bécancour, Christian Guérette (Environment) and Stéphanie Puxley (Purchasing) invited a dozen suppliers to presentations by the Action RE-buts organization, on how to develop a waste management plan. A representative from RECYC-QUÉBEC was also on hand to explain the workings of the ICI ON RECYCLE certification. Christian Guérette then spoke on the Bécancour Smelter’s waste management efforts and success stories. The session ended with a visit to the smelter’s central mechanical workshop, where suppliers observed how our facilities—and the commitment of our employees—were instrumental in proper segregation of waste materials.
In Baie-Comeau, 10 suppliers attended an activity organized by Patrice Bossé and Yvon Côté from Environment, and Guylaine Lessard, Yolland Ouellet and Carl Tremblay from Purchasing, with help from Denis Giasson. Participants heard presentations by Yvon Côté of the Conseil régional de l’environnement de la Côte-Nord and the Régie de gestion des matières résiduelles Manicouagan. Then they toured the garage, where André Deschênes showed them our recovery system.
The Baie-Comeau and Bécancour teams were proud to share their best practices in waste management with their suppliers and community organizations. All participants agreed that these sessions were both successful and motivating.
