Baie-Comeau Smelter achieves Elite level of Écolectrique network
The day the Baie-Comeau Smelter was inducted into Hydro-Québec’s Écolectrique network in June 2011, its General Manager, Luke Tremblay, set the next target: achieving Elite level. With this, the facility would join a select group that already included the Bécancour and Deschambault smelters. Within a year, Baie-Comeau had reached its goal!
Membership in the Écolectrique network, a Hydro-Québec program that recognizes the energy efficiency efforts of large corporations, requires annualized energy reductions of 50 GWh or more. For the Elite level, this reduction must be more than 250 GWh, a milestone that we reached with an annualized total of 336 GWh.
This accomplishment was officially recognized on September 26, 2012, during a ceremony at the Hydro-Québec research centre in Varennes. We joined our colleagues from the Deschambault Smelter, which was invited into this select club in 2011 with annualized energy savings of 303 GWh, and from the Bécancour Smelter, the first smelter to have achieved the Elite level back in 2008, with an annualized reduction of 253 GWh.
These results demonstrate our collective commitment to energy efficiency and our desire to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations, while maximizing the use of this invaluable Quebec resource. Much of our performance is attributable to our team’s efforts towards the more efficient use of electricity, a basic raw material for all smelters.
