Projects to reduce ergonomic risks - Bécancour Rod Plant

We are constantly seeking to improve how we perform our tasks and control risks in all of our facilities.
Strapping tools at the Shipping Department
Two pneumatic tools were replaced by one lighter battery operated tool.

Railcar door opening
We copied a tool from ADQ to handle railcar doors that were difficult for an operator to open. We also asked CN to provide a specific type of door, and we are rejecting railcars that do not correspond to our requirements.

Pallet design
We have changed the design of our pallets. By reducing the quantity of hardwood used in each, we have decreased its weight and thereby the ergonomic risks associated with its handling. Pallet handling is now easier.

Anchoring system in trucks
We now require truck companies to provide trucks with an anchoring system. This has eliminated the need to build wood squares to hold the coils inside the truck.

In addition, with this new requirement, we no longer have to nail the pallets to the truck floor.

Belt change at the casting wheel
A platform was installed to make this task secure and eliminate ergonomic risk.

Molten flow control pins
We have modified the equipment slightly to be able to remove the pins through a back and forward movement (at body level) rather than lifting them at arm’s length.

Filter change behind finishing mill
We have modified the box where we install the filters, building a system of slides that allow us to reach and easily move the filters with a pole.

Furnace C platform
This platform was designed to reduce the ergonomic risk when a molten sample is taken.
