Défi, on recycle, learning through example
Since 2008, small and medium-sized businesses in the Nicolet-Yamaska and Bécancour regional county municipalities have benefited from a free coaching service by taking part in the Défi, on recyle (Recycling Challenge) program. The initiative enables them to develop their own waste management plan with a view to achieving the ICI ON RECYCLE! designation from Recyc-Québec.
Unique to the region, this support for local businesses is the product of a partnership among 11 socio-economic organizations in the Bécancour-Nicolet-Yamaska area.
The Alcoa Foundation’s contribution to the success of this initiative goes beyond financial investment. The Partners Committee can tap into the expertise of people from the Bécancour Smelter to demonstrate the benefits of sound waste management. Sharing information and experience encourages contractors to take action in preserving the environment, fosters accountability among work teams, and helps achieve the cost savings that can result from proper waste management.
Over the course of this three-year initiative, the Partners Committee hopes to reach 150 businesses in Nicolet-Bécancour to foster the implementation of concrete actions that will lead to more effective waste management. Yet another example of how big industry can make a difference in its communities.
