Alcoa Canada Primary Metals: open to the world

The activities of the Alcoa Canada Primary Metals team extend well beyond the borders of Québec and even Canada. Thanks to projects in Iceland, Norway and elsewhere in the world, our experts share their best practices on a global scale.
Officially opened in June 2007, the Fjardaál aluminum smelter in Iceland has a total production capacity of about 325,000 metric tons per year. Construction began in July 2004 and, from the beginning of the project, employees from the Baie-Comeau, Bécancour and Deschambault smelters contributed through numerous exchanges on both sides of the Atlantic.
Since the spring of 2006, expertise and operational know-how have been shared in a structured manner through the Alcoa Primary Metals Center of Excellence. This organization comprises employees, from Canada and other countries of the world, who are experienced in all aspects of aluminum production. A number of employees from Alcoa Canada Primary Metals will put their knowledge to good use in Iceland as part of contracts lasting from two weeks to two years.  Some of those on extended stays will be accompanied by their families.
All told, almost 80 experts from Québec will have traveled to Fjardaál between now and 2008, making major contributions to the planning and start-up of the aluminum smelter. And the learning is going in both directions sinceour Icelandic colleagues are also sharing their experience with us.
This spirit of exchange bore fruit during the development and construction of a new anode plant in Norway, which supplies both the Fjardaál smelter and the Mosjøen plant in Norway. When employees of the new anode plant came to visit our Deschambault facility, Quebeckers received them warmly, sharing new knowledge and creating professional ties that will last for many years to come.
