Daily management: at the heart of Baie-Comeau’s efficiency
At the Baie-Comeau smelter, quality management is a daily affair. The strong presence of managers in various sectors of the plant is one indication. In fact, at least four times a week, members of management circulate throughout the facility to develop a better knowledge of every aspect of production, to gather employee feedback and to discuss with them the company’s business requirements.
A daily management board was also developed to keep a close eye on certain critical issues, most notably in the area of occupational health and safety (OH&S). The various OH&S issues and key projects are identified on this board. A colour code enables employees to quickly assess the situation or progress being made: green means things are going well, yellow means the situation should be monitored closely, and red signifies that immediate action is required.
This board also facilitates quick identification of the issues that need to be discussed during the daily supervisor meetings, as well as during the team meetings held once or twice a week. By measuring performance and taking action on a daily basis, we achieve the long-term objectives that ensure the company’s success.
