Daily management of scrubbers in the Electrolysis sector
The Air Environment team at the Deschambault aluminum smelter has developed a highly effective tool for optimally managing fluoride emissions at the scrubbers in the Electrolysis sector.
The tool in question is a large bulletin board that uses a system of colored zones to rate the day’s scheduled tasks . A task in the green zone has been completed without complications. A task in the yellow zone has some issue to be monitored. If a task is shown in the red zone, this indicates that a target has been exceeded or that there is some other problem calling for corrective measures.
Thanks to the board, team members can rapidly identify problems, standardize the actions to be taken when a target has been exceeded, and assure a quicker return to normal. The board also enables better monitoring of frequently occurring problems, for which more effective and precisely adapted long-term solutions need to be developed.
Since the implementation of daily management in September 2005, the plant has recorded a 40% reduction in its fluoride emissions. Let's just hope there's room for a gold star on this board!
