System update to meet new requirements
New and stricter environmental requirements for wastewater have been in place at the Bécancour Rod Plant since June 2006. The requirements apply to suspended particles, chlorides, oxidants and aluminum. New requirements for measurement tools and frequency were also implemented.
The closer monitoring now being required enabled the plant to gain a better understanding of its water management system, as well as its actual treatment capacity. The final conclusion: the existing facilities are not efficient enough to meet the new requiremens. This problem had not been anticipated due to inadequate knowledge of the equipment’s past performance. As a result, four incidences of non-compliance were recorded in 2006.
Procedural modifications were quickly implemented but the risk of non-compliance remains. Additional equipment will be needed to guarantee that the new parameters are met at all times. An analysis is underway to identify appropriate solutions and to install them as soon as possible.
