Process waste generation is a major challenge, especially at the Baie-Comeau Söderberg plant. For other types of waste, all four Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products plants in Québec are certified ICI ON RECYCLE, Level 3 (Performance).
Our goal was to reduce landfilled waste by 5% in 2011. Instead, we achieved an increase of 2%. This unfortunate gain is mainly related to the Bécancour Smelter, where an unusually large amount of used refractory lining was produced as a result of numerous equipment repairs throughout the year.
