Fossil energy consumption

Fossil fuel consumption is lower at the Baie-Comeau Smelter than in Bécancour and Deschambault because it does not operate anode baking ovens on site.  The primary fuel source used at the Bécancour and Deschambault smelters, as well as at the Bécancour Rod Plant, is natural gas.  This is substituted for light oil at the Baie-Comeau Smelter since natural gas is not available in the region.  Other fossil fuels used include diesel, gasoline and propane.

There was also an increase in fossil fuel consumption at the Baie-Comeau Smelter in 2011 due to higher production of value-added products (rod).
