Our plants also use some fossil fuels to bake anodes and in the foundry furnaces. The fuel used at our Bécancour and Deschambault smelters is natural gas. Because natural gas is unfortunately not available in the Baie-Comeau region, light oil must be used to fuel the foundry furnaces. (The smelter’s fossil fuel consumption still remains lower than at the Bécancour and Deschambault smelters since it does not have an anode baking plant). The other fossil fuels used in our daily operations are diesel, gas and propane.
There was a slight increase in fossil fuel consumption at the Baie-Comeau Smelter in 2012 due to increased production of high-value added products (rod).
