Transforming Aluminum, Transforming the Future
Alcoa Innovation is a partnership created to develop Québec’s aluminum transformation industry and market, in a sustainable and structuring way.
Launched in 2008, Alcoa Innovation is a partnership involving Alcoa, the Aluminum Research and Development Centre of Quebec (CQRDA) and the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ). Its mission is to support small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) in Québec’s aluminum transformation sector by:
- Championing the development of innovative products featuring transformed aluminum,
- Encouraging sustainable uses of aluminum, and
- Facilitating the development of technologies that will increase access to knowledge about aluminum products and the use of aluminum.
By assisting Québec SMEs with their innovative projects, from the initial design phase to prototyping, Alcoa Innovation aims to increase the volume of aluminum transformed in Québec, with a view towards increased sustainability. To the same end, Alcoa, Alcoa Innovation and l’Association des designers industriels du Québec organize a biennial industrial design competition with the intention of bringing new products to market.
The Alcoa Innovation team is working on such diverse projects as (projects description in French only):
In addition to being undeniably innovative and sustainable, these products clearly share another common trait: they highlight one or several of the intrinsic advantages of aluminum!
Alcoa Innovation also publishes a newsletter, INNOVER, (in French only), to highlight its achievements ant those of its partners, as well as to move closer to public and industrial decision-makers.
We provide Alcoa Innovation and its clients with access to the resources of the largest aluminum research center in the world, the Alcoa Technical Center, in Pittsburgh, PA. The expertise and facilities of the Smelting Center of Excellence, located at the Deschambault Smelter, are also at the disposal of the Alcoa Innovation research and development team.
Aluminum Research and Development Centre of Quebec (CQRDA)
By acting as a liaison, supervising, and sharing expertise and new technologies, the CQRDA aims to stimulate economic spin-offs by nurturing relationships among teaching institutions, SMEs of every kind, and companies involved in aluminum production and transformation.
Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ)
The CRIQ was created by the Québec Government to accompany Québec enterprises in their search for ways to increase their productivity and competitiveness through sustainable technological innovation. Its clients and partners can rely on a team of 250 employees in two laboratories, where experts conduct over 1,000 projects every year for companies of every size and from every region of the province. In addition to housing the Alcoa Innovation team, the CRIQ works in close collaboration with them to plan and conduct standards trials.
