Overview

Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products operates the Baie-Comeau, Bécancour and Deschambault smelters, as well as the Bécancour Rod Plant. All four facilities are certified ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004, and have an annual production capacity of roughly one million metric tons of ingots, castings, billets and aluminum rods.

The environmental, social and economic value of our products is critical to Alcoa’s success and that of its clients. Approximately 75% of the aluminum produced since 1888 is still in use today. Solid, light, durable and recyclable, it is used in a multitude of products. Aluminum reduces the environmental footprint of vehicles by decreasing fuel consumption, and therefore greenhouse gas emissions. It is also an important component of green buildings in urban areas experiencing rapid growth, as well as an ideal packaging material for users concerned with minimizing waste since aluminum is entirely recyclable. And, each time it is recycled, we save 95% of the energy used to produce it originally.

In 2010, the primary aluminum produced by Alcoa received Silver Level Cradle to Cradle® certification from MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry). This multi-attribute certification evaluates, among other things, a product’s safety to humans and the environment as well as its design for future life cycles.
