2011 — Health and Safety

Mapping Serious Accidents

An exercise to map the risks of accidents at the Baie-Comeau Smelter was held on May 18 and 19, 2010. The work group comprised a dozen employees from different facilities throughout our region. Its mandate was to develop a standard for all Alcoa Canada plants that will enable them to categorize and visualize risks in their location.

The tool, in the form of a PowerPoint presentation with hypertext, is easily exportable. Every facility can modify it to reflect its needs. It contains all fatal accidents that have occurred since the opening of the Baie-Comeau Smelter in 1957. Also included are all major accidents that have occurred since we joined Alcoa in 2000.

Potential risks are divided into three categories, as listed in the Alcoa database. The categorization of the risks makes the tool especially useful since “closed to be monitored” risks have been addressed either through administrative measures or safe work processes. These risks must be audited at least twice a year to confirm the effectiveness of the measures in place.

The Fatal Accident Risks Roadmap will be presented during new employee orientation, worker transfers to other departments, and employee awareness initiatives. In addition, the new tool will guide a twice yearly validation of the administrative countermeasures and safety practices in place to control fatal accidents.
