Alcoa and the Musée de la civilisation visit schools - A trip through time for 600 youngsters... and it’s not over!

In support of the educational objectives of the Musée de la civilisation de Québec (Quebec City museum of civilisation), Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation have provided financial support since 2006 to Trésors de familles : le Patrimoine à l’école (Family Treasures: Heritage at School). Supplied with a kit containing a magnifying glass, white gloves and educational material, fifth and sixth graders try to find a historically significant object in their home. They then present its story to their classmates, alongside a conservator from the museum, who comments on their discovery.
On April 23, it was the students’ turn to visit the conservators. A special meeting was held at the museum during which kids from two classes presented their finds. Martin Brière, Manager of the Deschambault Smelter and member of Alcoa Foundation, as well as Lysane Martel, Communications and Public Affairs Manager and Director of Alcoa Foundation in Canada, were in attendance and took the opportunity to exchange with the students.
Trésors de familles : le Patrimoine à l’école has helped raise awareness among 600 students in the greater Quebec City area of the importance of preserving and documenting their family heritage. Searching for objects at home often results in rewarding discussions with parents and grandparents about history and traditional customs, an educational experience like no other.
