2010 — Our People

Alloy of Talents: Teamwork at the heart of success

On April 22 and 23, the winning teams of the Alloy of Talents competition gathered at the bucolic Manoir Saint-Castin of Lac-Beauport near Quebec City to ex¬change their success stories with their colleagues from Baie-Comeau, Deschambault, Bécancour, Montréal, and Lake Charles.

Following a call for entries issued at the beginning of the year, a jury selected 28 projects deemed to be outstanding, namely due to their potential to be shared throughout Alcoa. The activity was a resounding success, illustrating once again that teamwork remains at the heart of the accomplish ments of our people.

The day began with a rally focused on health and safety in the workplace, an event that allowed the participants to establish ties and familiarize themselves with the site. A spirit of companionship was immediately established, setting the tone for the entire gathering.

During the afternoon, six best practice workshops provided the teams with an opportunity to attend their colleagues’ presentations in their respective categories: Excellence, Copy/Paste, Innovation, People, Clients and Environment, Health & Safety. Small groups were formed to foster information sharing between participants. What’s more, attendees were encouraged to share their newfound know-how with their colleagues upon returning to their respective plants. Teamwork was an essential component of the success of each featured project.

In honour of the efforts accomplished throughout the year, the winning teams gathered for a cocktail and a recognition dinner. The evening’s program kicked off with a conference by Pierre-Olivier Boily and Stéphane Côté, a para-cycling tandem of Québec athletes. The attendance ap-preciated the parallels established between the spheres of sport and work, such as the necessity to collaborate to attain outstanding results. Pierre-Olivier and Stéphane proudly represented Canada at the Para-cycling World Championships, sponsored by Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation, held on August 18 to 22 in Baie-Comeau. The evening ended outdoors, as the participants rallied around a campfire.

In keeping with our values, the event was organized based on the principles of eco-responsibility, which was quite natural given that April 22 was Earth Day! Several of Alcoa’s partners contributed to the success of the event. A special mention goes out to Alcoa Innovation and the Centre de formation professionnelle Qualitech for the design and production of the splendid Alloy of Talents trophies offered to the selected teams. Teamwork: our badge of success!
