Goodbye to paternalism

Publication: Exame Magazine - SP

To reduce the impact that it will cause in the small municipality of Juruti, in Pará, where a bauxite mine will begin operating in September, Alcoa has recently launched the Sustainable Juruti Fund in partnership with NGO, Funbio. In practical terms, the mining company has undertaken to invest R$ 2 million over the next two years so that a council, formed by the community itself, can decide how to use these funds to promote regional development. The money can be used, for example, for boosting local entities and for environmental education programs. "Alcoa is breaking away from the paternalistic relationship that is generally established between companies and the community in this type of undertaking", says Pedro Leitão, general secretary of Funbio.
