Alcoa is one of the 20 model companies in the Exame Sustainability Guide 2009

In its tenth edition the annual publication from Editora Abril highlights the sustainable actions of these companies over the course of the year
Alcoa is one of the 20 model companies listed in the 2009 edition of the Exame Sustainability Guide, published annually by Editora Abril (November, 2009). The survey, now in its tenth edition, highlights the sustainable actions of these companies over the course of the year. The Exame Sustainability Guide is today one of the most respected surveys of corporate responsibility practices in Brazil.
This year the 200 companies that took part had from May 13 to June 26 to fill in the questionnaires on-line that had been devised by the Center for Studies in Sustainability (GVces) of the Getulio Vargas Foundation. With this material, which contained almost 260 questions, the strategies, commitments and practices of the companies were assessed in three aspects of sustainability: environmental, economic-financial and social. There were in addition some introductory questions about transparency, conduct relative to bribery, corruption and corporate governance. After the questionnaires submitted by the companies had been analyzed, a deliberative council (comprising representatives from entities and companies) met to choose the 20 model organizations.

This valuable recognition will bring new challenges and further increase our commitment to this issue”, says Franklin L. Feder, president of Alcoa Latina America and the Caribbean.

This is the fourth time that Alcoa has been recognized as a model company in sustainability by the Exame Guide. In the 2006 edition, for example, the Company received particular mention in the areas of Values and Transparency, because of its Ethical Conduct Direct Line, and Government and Society, with the Sustainable Juruti case study.
The names of the 20 model companies in the 2009 Exame Sustainability Guide and the Sustainable Company of the Year were announced last night (11) during the award ceremony, which was held at the Unique Hotel in São Paulo. More information can be found on www.portalexame.com.br
