Sustainability School of Juruti (PA ) is well evaluated by its students

Students approve the Sustainability Agents’ Training Program

The Juruti Sustainability School, which was inaugurated in March this year to turn out professionals and leaders of civil and governmental organizations who are capable of developing sustainable initiatives in the West of Pará State, received a very positive evaluation from the 38 participants of the first group on the program. The concepts “poor”, “regular”, “good” and “very good” were used to evaluate the program, the teachers and the teaching resources that were provided. Overall, the course was considered “good” or “very good” by most of the students. In the recent survey 85% of the students used these concepts to rate the program that was being offered; 96% of them awarded these same marks to the teachers and 74% of them chose the same concept to evaluate the teaching resources offered.

This Peabiru Institute initiative, which has the support of Alcoa, is considered innovative by the students. Farmer Jenivaldo Roberto do Amaral, 33, a member of the Agricultural and Livestock Farming Cooperative of Small Rural Producers of Juruti (COPAJE) says that he was surprised by what was proposed by the course. “What surprised me was the fact that they set up a school for preparing sustainability agents, because it’s difficult. Sustainability still has no easy formula, no ready concept”, he says.

Lessons started in April and were divided into four modules: Mobilization of resources for the third sector; Mobilization and public administration; Management of resources for the third sector; and an end of course piece of work. In this program the students learn how to understand citizenship policies, prepare and manage projects, raise and manage funds and also how social and governmental organizations function.

The course lasts for 10 months, with total classroom time of 300 hours. The lessons are given by teachers from the Peabiru Institute and a certificate is issued by the same organization at the end of the course. “We carried out the selection and mobilization, but we don’t always have this much success”, celebrates Rui Martins, coordinator of corporate responsibility projects for the Peabiru Institute.

The success of the undertaking motivated those whose brain-child the Sustainability School was to expand the syllabus of the course offered next year. According to Martins, there is no shortage of ideas. “We’re structuring the 2010 plan taking into consideration the demands that exist in the town. There’s a series of projects coming up as a result of this”, he reveals.
