Company has won the Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking prize, awarded by the Mais [More] Institute for its socio-environmental research and training

Alcoa has just been recognized yet again for its good socio-environmental practices. This time it was with the 2009 Environmental Benchmarking Prize, which was awarded to the Company for its socio-environmental research and training practices by the Mais Institute. The Company received this recognition for preparing the Sustainability Guide for Hydroelectric Projects in Brazil, na unprecedented initiative in the country that clearly shows Alcoa’s specific management objectives for sustainability in its energy businesses.
“This external recognition shows our constant commitment to sustainability practices in those hydroelectric power stations where we have a shareholding. This is a victory for us and one sets a stamp of approval on our management model and the sustainability requirements we have proposed for our energy businesses”, explains Juliano Natal, an Alcoa Safety and Environment consultant.
Prizes were awarded to 30 Brazilian socio-environmental management cases this year, which were evaluated by a technical committee that comprised 16 specialists from 6 different countries. To be included on the Benchmarking Ranking the company needs to come under the scrutiny of a multidisciplinary technical committee, made up of specialists from various countries, who award points to the cases without having access to the name of the company.
It is also necessary to comply with regulations, as determined by the Benchmarking Program, now in its seventh edition and which has already selected 171 cases from more than 100 institutions during the period. Since it first appeared in 2003 the Benchmarking Program has listed and recognized 115 companies.
Institutions and managers present their practices in the various areas of socio-environmental management, thereby proving with the evidence they present the company’s commitment to the principles of sustainability. This is how they ensure that there is true convergence between discourse and practice.
Alumar is also recognized Alumar (Maranhão Aluminum Consortium), managed by Alcoa, was also recognized for its good socio-environmental practices. This time it was for its program for raising the height of its bauxite waste deposits, which extends the usable life of the areas set aside for this purpose. This practice leads to environmental, financial and social gains.
