Alcoa vice president assumes responsibility for the Sustainability, Health, Safety and Environment areas

The main challenge is to further integrate sustainability and the Company’s business operating strategy

Chemical engineer, Nilson P. Souza, 55, from São Paulo, has just taken over Alcoa’s sustainability, health, safety and environment areas. The executive is Vice President of Primary Products for Latin America and the Caribbean, a unit that brings together Alcoa’s main business operations in Brazil and the world, with responsibility for bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting operations.

Nilson Souza will have the challenge of further integrating sustainability with the operating strategy of the Company’s main areas of business. To complete Souza’s team and reporting to him directly Alcoa has named Domingos Campos to be Health, Safety and Environment Manager and Thais Magalhães to the Sustainability area.

"This new organizational structure marks an important distinction between other companies, which link Sustainability to sectors such as Marketing or Communication, and Alcoa, which considers the concept of Sustainability as a fundamental ingredient of the Company’s day-to-day operations", says Souza.

Nilson Souza began working for Alcoa in 1976, as a process engineer in the Primary Aluminum area in the Poços de Caldas (MG) plant. His experience as a manager in the company includes a period abroad and spells in the manufacturing, quality and human resources areas. He was also Operations Manager for the Poços de Caldas plant and director at the Alumar Consortium in São Luis (MA). In 2006 he took over as Director of Primary Products and in 2007 he also became Director of the Bauxite Mining Project for Juruti (PA), which will become operational this year.

Domingos Campos, who has become Manager for Health, Safety and Environment for Alcoa Latin America and the Caribbean, will be responsible for the organization and processes in these areas, in addition to providing support and services for all the Company’s business units in Brazil. "The elimination of all waste, allied to our total commitment to Alcoa’s Values and Principles will validate our license to operate", is how Domingos sums it up.

A graduate in Forestry Engineering from the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with a post-graduate degree in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina and an executive MBA from IBMEC-SP, Domingos Campos joined Alumar in São Luis (MA) in 1991 as an Environmental Engineer. In 2001 he was promoted to superintendent and in 2006 he was named Manager for Environment and Occupational Health and Safety.

To head up the Sustainability area the Company has named Thais Magalhães, who will be responsible for going into the subject in even more depth in the Company. "I intend to keep moving ahead with the Alcoa’s Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, supporting all areas in defining and implementing their strategies", she says.

Thais has been with Alcoa since 2007, having previously worked on sustainability projects for Real Bank. She is a graduate in Production Engineering from USP (University of São Paulo) and with a specialization in Group Facilitation and Psychology.

MINING
In turn, Alcoa’s Mining Director, José Carlos Danza, has made social scientist, Fábio Abdala, responsible for the Sustainability area in the mining units of Alcoa Latin America and the Caribbean, which covers institutional relations with the sector’s stakeholders. The newly appointed manager has been working for Alcoa since 2007, when he became a consultant working with Sustainability and Social Projects for the Juruti bauxite mine and coordinator of the Sustainable Juriti program, which is supported by the Getulio Vargas Foundation and FUNBIO (Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity).

Fabio Abdala has a Master’s degree in Political Science and a PhD in International Relations. He has 15 years experience in environmental governance and worked as a public employee manager in the Amapá State government and with the Ministry of the Environment and as executive secretary of the Amazon Working Group social network.
