Alcoa’s Tânia Nossa is one of the 50 most strategic technology executives in the world

Tânia was recognized for connecting the whole of Alcoa’s operation in Juruti (PA), which is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, to the 35 countries where the Company operates.

Brazilian Tânia Nossa, IT manager for Alcoa in Latin America and the Caribbean features on the list of the 50 most strategic technology executives in the world, according to American magazine, Information Week. Tânia was recognized for connecting the whole of Alcoa’s operation in Juruti (PA), which is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, to the 35 countries where the Company operates.
To form part of this select group of executives Tânia competed globally with various other projects. “I’m extremely honored with this recognition. This victory is not just mine, but belongs to the whole of Alcoa’s IT team, which exceeds our expectations on a daily basis. Using the most modern means of communication and information technology we managed to connect the systems of the Juruti mine, which is located in such a remote region”, says Tânia Nossa, who is also the general manager of GBS (Global Business Services) for Alcoa in Latin America and the Caribbean, a shared service area that brings together into one structure the administrative and financial services departments.
GBS is a service provider in the areas of purchasing, finance, human resources, health, safety and environment and IT for all Alcoa business units in the region. Tânia Nossa has been with Alcoa since 1992. In this time the executive has gained experience in units in Sao Paulo, Itajubá (MG), Poços de Caldas (MG) and Pittsburgh, in the United States. She is a graduate in Data Processing and Business Administration from Mackenzie University and has an MBA in Marketing from FIA-USP.
The Juruti Mine The Juruti Mine has one of the world’s largest deposits of high quality bauxite, which is necessary for supplying the expansion needs of the Alumar-Consórcio de Alumínio [Aluminum Consortium] refinery in São Luís, Maranhão. The Juruti project started in 2000 when research into evaluating its mineral reserves’ potential began and the economic viability of the undertaking was established.
Juruti is a municipality that is more than 125 years old and that has some 34,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 2007, of which 60% live in 150 rural communities, which are predominant in the region. Its economy was traditionally based on manioc growing, fishing, livestock farming and certain types of hunting and gathering.
