The Company is donating R$ 333,734.50 to 90 charitable bodies in the State via its BRAVO! Program, which encourages and recognizes the voluntary work of its employees

Alcoa has handed over contributions to 90 of Pernambuco’s community promotion bodies. The donations, which total R$ 333,734.50, form part of the BRAVO! Program that encourages and recognizes the voluntary work of the Company’s employees.
In 2008 approximately 600 employees (61%) from Alcoa Itapissuma (PE) took part in volunteer activities, which shows the commitment of the Company’s employees to the communities where the unit is located. Volunteers from the unit dedicated a total of 29,400 hours of their time to these entities.
The BRAVO! Program was launched in 2002 in all Alcoa units worldwide. It donates the equivalent of US$ 250 to each body in which the Alcoa employee does at least 50 hours voluntary work in their spare time. Among the various units that take part in the program are: Santo André (SP), Juruti (PA), Poços de Caldas (MG), Tubarão (SC), Sorocaba (SP), Itajubá (MG), São Luis (MA) and São Paulo (SP).
The funds earmarked by Alcoa for the third sector are directed, first and foremost, to entities and programs where employees have an effective participation. There is a double benefit in this scheme: the hours of dedication of the volunteer and the funds donated.
In Brazil Alcoa also has a program that is along the same lines, but is exclusively for trainees: BRAVO! BRASIL. Every trainee who completes 40 hours voluntary work for the same body outside working hours receives a donation of R$275 for it from the Alcoa Institute.
About the Alcoa Foundation The objective of the Alcoa Foundation, whose headquarters is in the United States and which was founded in 1952, is to allocate funds to projects in the communities where the Company has units everywhere in the world. These fund injections are, as a priority, earmarked for programs in which there is an effective and voluntary participation on the part of Company employees and members of their families. During its life the Alcoa Foundation has revealed itself to be a source of change and improvement for communities, having invested approximately US$ 490 million since it was first set up.
In 2008 donations from Alcoa and the Alcoa Foundation totaled more than US$ 50.6 million in 32 countries. Since 1995, jointly with the Alcoa Institute some R$ 90 million have been donated to more than 1800 social projects that benefited 32 towns and notched up more than a million hours of voluntary work.
Among the highlights of the Alcoa Foundation’s donations are investments of U$ 8.6 million to the six-year Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Program, aimed at research in the area of global conservation and sustainability through partnerships with renowned academic institutions and non-governmental organizations located on all the continents. The University of São Paulo (USP) is the Brazilian partner-institution in this project, which provides international recognition for researchers from the university and leads to advances in studies in the environmental area.
About the Alcoa Institute The main objective of the Alcoa Institute, which was set up in Brazil in 1990, is to improve the living conditions of the communities where the Company and its subsidiaries operate. Through its social programs and from the donations of Group companies, in addition to additional resources coming from the Alcoa Foundation, the Institute finances projects that meet the real needs and wants of these communities. The activities are predominantly in the areas of education, health, the environment and social well-being. These actions by Alcoa have a strong ally in the commitment of the Company’s employees to volunteer activities.
In 2008, Alcoa, the Alcoa Institute and the Alcoa Foundation, together, donated funds totaling R$ 10.2 million that were distributed as one-off donations and to community projects and volunteer programs. Since 1995 nearly R$90 million have been donated to more than 1800 social projects that notched more than one million hours of voluntary work. In 2008 alone 940,000 people in 32 Brazilian municipalities benefited from the donations.
