Alcoa, Alumar and their employees join forces to help flood victims in Maranhão

Company is sending resources, medication, donations and other items to minimize the impact of the damaged caused by the rain

Alcoa, via the Alcoa Institute and the Alcoa Foundation, is sending resources to help flood victims in Maranhão. The Alcoa Foundation has set aside U$ 50,000 and the Alcoa Institute R$ 50,000 for the Maranahão State Public Security Department. Alcoa operates in the state capital through Alumar (The Maranhão Aluminum Consortium) that is formed by Alcoa, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto Alcan. Alumar is one of the world’s biggest complexes for the production of primary aluminum and alumina and plays an important socio-economic role in the state.

In addition to these donations Alumar is concentrating its efforts on helping families affected by the floods with various other initiatives:

- More than 40 types of medication have been donated (antifungicides, antibiotics, antiparasite drugs and others) to the State Department of Health (SES) to help in the treatment of the main illnesses caused by the flood waters;

- Alumar employees and service provider personnel made a huge concerted effort to collect donations for the homeless, resulting in hundreds of food parcels, items of clothing, shoes and many toys. All collected material was delivered to the Civil Defense;

- The Alumar employee cooperative, CECME, also donated various items of primary necessity that were requested by the Civil Defense, like water and hygiene products.

“We’ll spare no effort in helping the families that were affected by the floods in Maranhão. We’ve pledged our help and are alive to this cause as part of our commitment to local communities”, says Nilson Ferraz, director of Alumar.
