Alcoa presents its Sustainability Report for the sixth consecutive year

Publication gives a picture of the evolution of the Company’s initiatives in the direction of its sustainable development in Brazil

For the sixth consecutive year (2007/2008) Alcoa has presented its Sustainability Report The publication gives a picture of the Company’s operations in the country between August 2007 and December 2008. The information refers to the activities of its units in Itapissuma (PE), Juruti (PA), Poços de Caldas and Itajubá (MG), Sorocaba and Utinga (SP), Tubarão (SC), the Alumar consortium in São Luís (MA), the offices in the São Paulo capital and including the hydroelectric power stations in which Alcoa has a shareholding. All content is available on Alcoa’s website in Brazil - www.alcoa.com.br

This Report shows Alcoa’s commitment to sustainability as proved by reports in a journalistic style that focus on the six sustainability-linked issues that are the most relevant for the Company in Brazil: local and regional development; people management and development; work relations’ strategies; waste and emission management; access to energy and its efficient use; and conservation and biodiversity – all interlinked by two transversal themes: dialogues with stakeholders and transparency and responsibility.

“Alcoa’s sustainability agenda is being permanently constructed. With this Report we are seeking to give society an account of our actions in this direction. This is yet another channel for strengthening the dialogue with our public and we are building long-lasting relationships of trust”, says Franklin L. Feder, president of Alcoa Latin America and the Caribbean.

Among the subjects covered by the Report those that stand out are:
- The structure for the creation of the Sustainable Juruti Council, which brings together representatives from local authorities, the business sector and civil society. The Council, which is already operating in an official and definitive capacity, establishes a permanent forum for dialogue and collective action between those parties that are interest in the municipality’s sustainable development.
- Reduction and neutralization of emissions. The unit in Poços de Caldas recorded a 50% reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases with its New Soderberg technology modernization project.
- Alcoa has become a founding member of the Brazilian GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) Project, the international methodology most widely used by companies for quantifying and managing greenhouse gas emissions.

For the first time the publication reports the activities developed by the Company in the region, particularly in Brazil, where it is guided by the directives of the third version (G3) proposed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) . This organization, whose headquarters are in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, has developed a worldwide standard for the production of sustainability reports.

Launched in 2006, the G3 tries to promote an alignment with the values defended for example by the Global Pact and by the Ecuador Principles, among other global actions directly linked to corporate responsibility. In this context the GRI demands that publications prepared under its seal prioritize aspects like transparency, relevance, reliability, comparability and completeness.

“In moving towards adopting the GRI directives Alcoa is reaffirming its commitment to good governance practices and the rendering of accounts to stakeholders”, is how Franklin L. Feder summarizes it.
