Performance in Juruti, employees´ engagement in voluntary actions and care for the environment classify Alcoa

Alcoa is once again among the 50 successful innovation and sustainability cases that deserve to be recognized and replicated, according to IstoÉ Dinheiro, a leading Brazilian weekly business magazine.
According to the magazine, “Sustainable actions will only pay back if they satisfy clients’ needs and respect business logic. Old management standards are not sufficient to conciliate so many variables. Only with innovation and a bolder posture is it possible to adapt to the triumphant new world.”
Alcoa is in the select group of Worthy Companies, recognized by its performance in Juruti, Western Pará; employees’ voluntary actions; and the 2020 Global Sustainability Strategy. The magazine publishes information given by Nemércio Nogueira, Alcoa Latin America & Caribbean Director-Corporate Affairs. He says that “all our actions are oriented toward sustainable regional development and reflect the values of the Alcoa management system”.
In Juruti, where the Company is implementing a new bauxite mine, Alcoa executes various programs to benefit the local community, such as the Sustainability School, a course to train leaders in the subject, and the Sustainable Juruti Council, a consultation entity dedicated to monitor and recommend activities to develop the municipality in a sustainable way.
IstoÉ Dinheiro also took into account the 2020 Global Sustainability Strategy, an Alcoa plan that started out with the global goal of reducing by 25%, until 2010, the volume of greenhouse gases produced in 1990. This goal was reached in 2003, seven years before the set date, although aluminum production grew continually in that period. Alcoa is also one of the founding members of USCAP-United States Climate Action Partnership, an organization set up by leading American companies and environmental NGOs which advocates substantial reduction of greenhouse gases emissions.
The publication also based its judgment on the environmental parks of Alcoa plants in Poços de Caldas, São Luis and Tubarão, as well as the intense voluntary activity that is part of Alcoans’ routine activities in Brazil.
About Alcoa Alcoa is the world leader in the production and management of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina combined, through its active and growing participation in all major aspects of the industry.
