The Juruti Sustainability School will turn out professionals and civil society and government organization leaders, thereby providing the Para municipality with a virtuous cycle of economic growth, respect for the environment and social justice

A course for forming leaders in sustainability has just been created; it is not directed at executives, neither is it being conducted in large urban centers. – this time it will take place in Juruti, in the west of Pará. For the first time the town will have a training course for sustainability agents. The aim of the Juruti Sustainability School is to prepare professionals and leaders of civil and government organizations who are capable of developing sustainable initiatives in the region. This particular initiative is counting on technical support from the Peabiru Institute, a non-governmental organization with vast experience in the Amazon region, and funds provided by the Alcoa Foundation and the Alcoa Institute.
“Alcoa has every intention of remaining in Juruti for the next 70 years and thereby coexisting with at least three generations. We need to establish long-lasting relations and ensure the joint construction of new development scenarios. We are convinced that this course will serve as a model for the region and for Brazilâ€, says Franklin L. Feder, president of Alcoa Latin America and the Caribbean
Lessons will start in March and be divided into four modules: mobilizing resources for the third sector; mobilization and public management; managing resources for the third sector and an end of course extended essay. At this stage 30 representatives from 15 different public and private not-for-profit organizations from the region will have been trained. The course will last 10 months, spread over a total of 300 hours. Lessons will be given by teachers from the Peabiru institute and a certificate will be provided by the organization at the end of the course.
According to Rui Martins, coordinator of the Juruti Sustainability School and assistant director of the Peabiru Institute the expectation is that this will contribute significantly to the development of the municipality. “We are looking to establish a community of integrated people, where citizens live alongside one another in harmony and through this course to develop a critical mass of planners who think about sustainability†he comments.
For Liege Silva Costa, a representative of the Juruti Human Rights Commission (CDHJ), the development of a project like this is fundamentally important in the town for training and guiding all the local institutions. “We are also looking for knowledge and we want to have representatives from our organization in the Sustainability School to be able to act in a more effective way in societyâ€, he concludes.
