From July 10 through August 6 the event will deal with the importance of the Amazon and its role in the planet’s climate changes.

The exhibition “Climate Changes and the Amazon Forest” will take place from July 10 through August 6 in the United Nations headquarters in New York. The exhibition is part of the Cultural Program of Amazônia Brasil in New York, one of the most important Brazilian initiatives so far held about the region, and which comprises a further three exhibitions in New York: Amazônia Brasil on Pier 17, “Amazônia Design – Fashion and Sustainable Economy", in the World Financial Center, and an exhibition of photographs by Rodrigo Petrella, at the National Museum of the American Indian, in South Manhattan.
The “Climate Change and the Amazon Forest” exhibition will be exclusively sponsored by Petrobras. The company sponsored the first international edition of the Amazônia Brasil Program, that took place in Paris, in 2005. The exhibition on climate change and tropical forests will be in the entrance lobby of the UN building, where there will be models, visual images and panels showing the role of the Amazon in the global carbon and water cycles, the imbalance of which is also responsible for the warming of the planet.
A seminar with the same name forms part of the exhibition’s opening program, which will take place at the same time as ECOSOC, the body that coordinates the UN’s economic and social work, specialist agencies and other institutions that belong to the United Nations system. This exhibition is being supported by the National Institute of Research of the Amazon (INPA), with scientific advice from Antonio Donato and art direction by Ary Perez.
The Amazônia Brasil in New York Program is sponsored by Alcoa and the Alcoa Foundation, with collaboration from IBM, Natura, Apex, Havaianas and the American Express Foundation, in addition to recognition by the Brazilian government via its Ministries of the Environment, Foreign Relations and Culture, the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, the Brazilian Consulate in New York and the Brazilian Mission to the UN. Amazônia Brasil is working in partnership with various research institutions, like the Emílio Goeldi Museum of Para, and in this eighth edition is receiving support from important American institutions, such as the World Financial Center, Central Park, Smithsonian Institute - the Museum of the American Indian, Seaport and the New York Board of Education.
Alcoa had the vision and the initiative to take the exhibition to New York in 2008 after it had been to various other countries. For Franklin L. Feder, president of Alcoa Latin America and the Caribbean, the objective of supporting an event like this is to make the people of the world aware of the need to attract resources to ensure sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon region and to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases.
"Alcoa is committed to preserving the Amazon’s biodiversity through various initiatives”, states Feder. “Among these is its partnership with Conservation International in a program that is collaborating with implementation of conservation units in the region, a strategy indicated as being the most efficient for protecting biodiversity and containing deforestation in areas which are socially and economically dynamic. Support for this important exhibition in New York is yet anther example of our investments in actions that show the need to help preserve and develop the forest in a sustainable way, for the benefit of its millions of inhabitants", says Feder.
