Eighty nine entities from Pernambuco receive donations from Alcoa

The Company is donating R$ 282,487.58 to 89 charitable entities in the region via its BRAVO! Program, which encourages and recognizes the voluntary work of its employees

This Monday, April 28, Alcoa will be delivering checks to 89 community promotion entities in Pernambuco. The donations, totaling R$ 282,487.58, form part of the BRAVO! Program, which encourages and recognizes the voluntary work of the Company’s employees. Among the entities that will receive donations are the Shekiná Educational Crèche and the Elosport Association.

The Shekiná Educational Crèche was founded in 2003 and is located in Olinda (PE). The entity deals with more than 60 children, developing educational and teaching activities and IT courses. According to Rita Telles, President of the entity, the amount donated by Alcoa will provide the children with a lot of benefits. “With these funds we intend to conclude building a canteen, which will add to the well-being of our children and make life more comfortable for them”, says Rita.

The Elosport Association, which is located in Paulista (PE), serves 150 children from communities in the city, encouraging them to practice sport and helping them enjoy their leisure. For José Alves, the association’s president, the funds being given to them by Alcoa are going to be fundamental when it comes to new projects. “We’re studying the possibility of buying a piece of land and building our own premises. In addition, we’re promoting the 2nd Elocopa Soccer Championship, which will be of benefit to hundreds of children and young people”, says José. Besides these two entities health centers, crèches, schools, sporting associations, homes, hospitals and residents’ associations in Pernambuco will also receive donations from the Alcoa Foundation and the Alcoa Institute.

Dedication in Pernambuco – In 2007 more than 650 employees (63%) from Alcoa in Itapissuma (PE) got involved with volunteer activities, which shows the commitment of the Company’s employees to those communities where the units are located. Last year, Company volunteers in the region notched up a total of 32,500 hours of dedication to the various entities.

The Bravo! Program, which was launched in 2002 in all of Alcoa’s units worldwide, gives the equivalent of US$ 250 to each entity in which an Alcoa employees does at least 50 hours voluntary work, outside normal working hours. Among the various units that are taking part in the program are Santo André (SP), Juruti (PA), Itajubá (MG), São Luis (MA) and São Paulo (SP).

The funds given by Alcoa to the third sector are directed, first and foremost, to entities and programs where employees are effectively involved. There is a double benefit in this scheme: the hours dedicated to voluntary work and the funds donated.

In Brazil Alcoa also has a program that is along the same lines, but is exclusively for trainees: BRAVO! BRASIL. Every trainee who completes 40 hours voluntary work for the same entity outside working hours receives a donation of R$275 for the entity from the Alcoa Institute.
