Alcoa in Brazil
Press Releases
Smelter Recommended for Social Responsibility Certification

An aluminum smelter operated by Alcoa Alumino, the Brazilian division of Pittsburgh-based Alcoa (NYSE: AA), has been recommended for SA 8000 social responsibility certification by auditor Det Norske Veritas, the company said.

The smelter located in Pocos de Caldas in the southeast state of Minas Gerais, would be the second Alcoa factory in the world to receive the certification. "This conquest proves the alignment of our unit with Alcoa's vision to create exceptional value for clients, shareholders, suppliers, workers and communities where we operate," said plant manager Edson Schiavotelo.

Det Norske Veritas takes into consideration norms of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Children's Rights when auditing companies.

Alcoa is the world's largest aluminum producer. The Brazilian division of the group, which runs the Alumar and Pocos de Caldas smelters, produces a quarter of the country's total primary aluminum output of some 1Mt/y.
