Fish Fry Project – for safer food and generating income
On July 5, 2007 five thousand tambaqui [red-bellied pacu] fry (young fish) were released into Lake Grande in the Juruti Velho region in the municipality of Juruti. Alcoa’s objective with this initiative is to contribute to food safety and the generation of income for the region’s communities where fishing is an important activity.

The program is beginning with some ten communities being actively involved and each of those included in the initiative brings in others from the surrounding area.

The fish fry were released from four rafts, each one of which is equipped with three net-tanks, installed in the Galiléia, Jauari, Capiranga and Ingrácia communities. With the exception of the Ingrácia community that received 1,400 fry, each of the other communities received 1,200 tambaqui young. The communities themselves built the rafts under the guidance of technicians and local residents were also trained in how to feed the fry and in hygiene and tank maintenance.

The program for raising fish in net-tanks is being developed by Alcoa as part of its Environmental Control Plans (PCAs).
