Council for a Sustainable Juruti
Rural producers, fishermen, business people, operatives, teachers, members of the Town Administration and the Town Council, as well representatives from public bodies and NGOs, applauded the official formation of the Council for a Sustainable Juruti, last Thursday afternoon, February 14, during the IInd Integration Workshop. Three company representatives, three public authority representatives and nine from social movements in Juruti go to form the new institution. In all, over the two days of the event, more than 100 participants confirmed the full member and alternate institutions that will constitute the council over the next six months, during which time the model will be tested and consolidated. The proposal for setting up this Council has been studied since September, 2007, when the first Workshop was held and a Working Group was created to refine the proposal.

The setting up of this new institution in Juruti is considered by many to be an example to be followed in other municipalities. The council will be a consultative body and will observe the activities being promoted for the sustainable development of Juruti, whether by companies or public authorities, including Alcoa’s own bauxite mining operation and the Environmental Control and the Positive Agenda Programs, both of which are being developed by the Company.

The proposal was presented over the last four months by various communities and institutions from Juruti, as a way of democratizing and bringing together the maximum number of contributions from all the stakeholders.

Giving support to the discussions that take place in the Council eight technical Chambers are going to be created in the areas of Health; Education; Environment; Security; Infrastructure and Sanitation; Culture and Tourism; Rural Development and the Economy and Labor. These will collect and debate the social demands to provide input for the Council. Once the definitive group has been created each mandate of the Council for a Sustainable Juruti will be for one year.

In Party Conferences organizations were able to elect representatives to the Council.
