In Juruti Alcoa is constantly working in partnership with the local community. In 2005 three public hearings were held to discuss setting up the mine, to collect information and to analyze granting the license. Prior to this, nearly 70 meetings had been held with representatives of the more than 100 communities in the municipality, where the Company has been heavily involved with promoting a strong relationship with local society.
By adopting the Positive Agenda - actions aimed at the areas of Education, Health, Security, Infrastructure and Social Assistance, it will be possible to offer improvements in the quality of life of the population. This set of activities, with an estimated budget of R$ 50 million, will ensure there are benefits for the area for the whole time the business venture is in activity. Through its important partnerships with institutions like the National Industrial Apprenticeship Service (Senai) and the Commercial and Business Associations of Juruti (ACEJ) and Santarém (ACES), Alcoa has been urging the local business community in the West of Pará to become qualified. In doing this it is encouraging professional growth and the generation of jobs and income.
The Company is also investing in building and improving many public works like hospitals, Basic Health Units, laboratories, sanitary landfill sites, bridges and schools. It is also constantly helping with actions for environmental education, supporting culture and strengthening regional security, thereby bringing about improvements in all sectors of the community. In July, 2007, nearly 150 people took part in a meeting that brought together the directors of the Association of Communities of the Juruti Velho Region (Acorjuve) and the President of Alcoa, Latin America, Franklin L. Feder, in order to create a community council to define an agenda of activities jointly with the
Company.
