Alcoa forms community partnerships to plant over 300,000 trees
Alcoa launched the "One Million Trees" project in 1998 to encourage Alcoa employees by giving them the opportunity to, individually or in groups, plant trees during the next ten years. Our objective is to encourage each Alcoa employee and provide him the chance to plant at least one tree a year, during the next ten years, to thus achieve our goal of planting one million trees by the year 2008. By taking such action, we restate Alcoa's commitment to environmental protection and offer our personnel the role of participating actively in promoting our principles. Alcoa Aluminum (Brazil) has so far planted 330,000 trees through the following actions: donation of seedlings to employees; planting of trees at the plants by employees, customers, suppliers, visitors and retired personnel; reforestation, landscaping and tree planting in the communities (specifically in schools and public parks). Inspired by this project, Alcoa's plants have set up a number of partnerships, several of which are supported by the Instituto Cultural e Filantrópico Alcoa (The Alcoa Cultural and Philanthropic Institute) and by the Alcoa Foundation. Several projects have sprung up from these partnerships: Projeto Verdes Quintais (Green Back Yard) and Cidade Feliz (Happy Town), in the city of Poços de Caldas This is a partnership with the Secretariat of Urban Services and the Secretariat of Social Actions of the Poços de Caldas City Authority. The objective is to line the city's streets with trees and encourage residents of the Parque Esperança neighborhood to grow plants and trees in their backyards. The "Crece com tus árboles" (Grow with Your Trees) project in Lima, Peru This is a partnership with Peru's Comision Nacional del Medio Ambiente (the National Environmental Commission). Twenty schools were chosen to help build a community tree nursery with approximately 300 native trees from Peru's central region. Sponsorship of the publication of the book Manguezal - O Berçario dos Mares (Mangrove Swamps - the Seas' Nursery), written by Célio Muniz and Eloisa Elena - Itapissuma, State of Pernambuco Célio is a consultant on environmental matters and an expert on eco-tourism. His partnership with the Alcoa plant in Itapissuma includes trekking on trails through mangrove swamps and areas of the Atlantic Rain Forest. Projeto Pau-Brasil - Poços de Caldas, State of Minas Gerais Five hundred Brazil wood saplings were planted in several locations to celebrate Brazil's 500th anniversary. This project involved all of the elementary school students (totaling 12,000 students from the 1st to the 8th grades) in Poços de Caldas and included a poetry competition.
