The actions being carried out in Juruti show just how seriously Alcoa treats issues relating to the environment, where the Company goes beyond the demands of the law and acts in accordance with its own global management standards.
With the support of NGOs and specialist environmental institutions Alcoa carried out a survey of all aspects of the area’s fauna, flora and water resources. In addition, in partnership with these entities and the community it is carrying out a series of actions, one of which is the launch of a program for supporting the conservation of the biodiversity in an area that is particularly rich in species that lies in the region between the rivers Tapajós and Madeira, in the West of Para and the Eastern Amazon.
This initiative with Conservation International (CI), which will last for five years, will protect the region’s biodiversity and halt deforestation. Another example is the participation of the Juruti community and Alcoa in the project, “Turtles of the Amazon”, which is organized by the National Center for the Conservation and Management of Reptiles and Amphibians (RAN) of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Renewable Resources
(Ibama).
