Development indicators for Juruti
To monitor the development of Juruti, in the second semester of 2007 Alcoa invited the Center of Studies in Sustainability of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (GVCes) to construct indicators that will define the priority targets for the region and surrounding areas, and feed into public decision-making processes. The Set of Indicators for Juruti will be available on-line and in publications in the second semester of 2009.
Creating these indicators involved wide-ranging bibliographic research, diagnosis of the base line, taken from secondary data, preparatory visits to Juruti, Santarém and Belém, participation in workshops, measurement of the territory, public consultations, a georeferenced support and diagnosis system and monitoring.
The construction of indicators and subsequent monitoring of local development is also likely to include the operation of a system for supporting territorial management, the objective of which will be to underpin decision-taking, both as far as concerns public policies as well as those of civil society and private initiative. The georeferenced database of indicators contains information about the nature of the territory, its use and occupation, and is taken from various available sources, such as maps, satellite images, registers, etc. It receives input from partnerships with research institutions and non-governmental organizations that know and operate in the region.
At the same time a modeling system of the territorial dynamic should be developed for monitoring, analyzing and simulating socio-economic and environmental processes in order to place the information needed for decision-taking at the disposal of all participants for consultation purposes.
