International recognition – CONJUS
Two members of the Sustainable Juruti Council (CONJUS) took part in the “Rights, Risks and Responsibility” meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, which took place between March 30 and April 3, 2009. Some 30 representatives from institutions from 10 countries, among which England, Nigeria, the United States and Brazil, met to evaluate their experiences of community / mining company relationships.
The even was promoted by the London School of Economics and Political Science, an English university specializing in economics and political science; CommDev, an organization linked to an international financial corporation; and non-governmental organization, Business Community Synergies, in partnership with the Alcoa Foundation.
CONJUS was represented by José Neto Vieira, its general coordinator and president of the 100% Juruti Movement; and Gustavo Hamoy, also a member of the Council and president of the Juruti Trade and Business Association (ACEJ). Viviane Penna, a Community Relations analyst from Alcoa also took part in the event in Johannesburg.
In addition to CONJUS, other experiences were selected, such as that of the African Institute for Energy Governance, from Uganda; the Community Development Foundation, from Burkina Faso; and Pró-Natura, from Nigeria. The CONJUS experience attracted the attention of participants and many expressed an interest in adopting a similar model in their own locations.
